A Note on Lessons from Nature

1.         Lessons of Humility : (Oceans)

When you stand at an Oceanside you are overwhelmed by the powerful roar of the waves. The majestic splendor of the view from a mountain makes us recognize and accept that we are dependent on a power beyond ourselves.

2.      Meekness and Resilience : (Grass)

Let us look at the grass beneath our feet in garden. It gets stepped on, driven over, spit on, and taken for granted. Yet it continues to spring back to life even in the worst of conditions. In summer it burns up in the heat but come fall, it is back in full force. It is as tenacious as it is humble. Remember the example of grass when people take you for granted, step on you, or a stranger cuts you in traffic. Think of grass that has meekness woven into its very nature. When you have been truly wronged it is love that comforts and lifts us. The design of love is unselfishness and meekness. It is pride, ego and selfishness that stops us from springing back like the grass even in the toughest of times.

3.      Patience, Quiet strength, Comfort : (Trees)

From an acorn grows an oak tree, and gets on to provide shelter and homes to many. If one examines the rings of a tree, an entire history unfolds. There are narrow rings around its bark, large rings, distorted rings. Each ring has a story to tell. A large ring brings to mind a summer of prosperity and abundance of rain and sun, leading to much growth and progress. A narrow ring tells the story of a tough summer of tribulations. Water was sparse and sunshine too much. Yet it is these narrow rings that give the tree its strength and make it solid. The combination of fat rings with the thin, narrow rings gives the tree flexibility to bend but not to break, to stand up against winds and survive. So when we pass through a tough, “drought” year, we must remember that in the end it is tough times that give you your strength, be ever hopeful and grateful no matter what part of the cycle of life you find yourself in.

(4)     Be flexible : (Trees)

The trees that bend a little in the breeze can grow to withstand the wild wind. We too must learn to be flexible in our thoughts and attitudes in order not to be broken up in any storm of criticism or opposition.

(5)     Teamwork is Important : (Forests)

An important lesson from forests is individual organisms and trees may not survive the fury of weather. However individual trees support one another and other forms of life. Do you share support with those around you ? Everyone’s contribution makes a difference so accept the support and contribution of all.

(6)     Provide a growth environment : (Trees)

A tree provides an environment that supports the growth of many other life forms. So too, every leader must provide a nurturing environment that empowers and enables others to take on greater responsibilities and develop into full-grown leaders.

(7)     Be rooted in a solid value – system : (Roots)

Trees have extensive roots that extend deep into the soil to reach vital sources of water. As humans, how extensive is our root system? Can we be rooted in principles and values that will help us take sound decisions

(8)     Be free of biases : (Sun)

The sun gives light and energy to all without discrimination. Can we also provide light to everyone without any bias?

(9)     Joy of Giving : (Water)

However strong the waves in the ocean, the water returns everything back to the shore. We humans can learn from this to give without any expectations.

Nature is harmonious at its core and continuously moves towards a restoration of harmony or equilibrium. Working with nature’s tide induces an expansion of inner faculties. Therefore, one who works for brotherhood and kindliness has all nature’s evolutionary force with him, bringing strength and light.
