An Interview with Surinder Anoop Singh Sohal, TYBMS Sem 5 Topper, Seva Sadan’s R.K.Talreja College (Center for Management Courses) (76.17%)
- Tell us about yourself.
My hobby is to read books and magazines especially on finance and I also love to read newspaper daily. I like to watch action movies especially from Hollywood and I love to watch discovery and national geographic channel. I am a very workaholic person. I don’t like to waste my time. I always give my first priority to my studies. I live my life on the basis of two most significant principles:-
1. Never expect from others
2. Life is too short so do it now what , achieve now whatever you want to achieve
- Were you expecting to top in the exams? To whom would you credit this success to?
Not exactly but my wish was to top in the exam. So I put my every effort to do top in the exams, and the competition is very keen in my college as well as my classes. The biggest hurdle that I have face is that I have a phobia of writing a theory paper because it was never complete on time.
My success credit goes to my teachers and Gurus who encourage me that I can create a history. And the last but not the least my PARENTS.
- Did you prepare religiously from day One or A few weeks before the exams?
My biggest hurdle is to write theory paper so it becomes necessary for me to have a good command on theory to score good marks because we have to face four theory subjects. To have an influence on theory subject I am preparing from the first day of my studies.
- How did you allot time to different subjects?
I need to focus more on theory subjects so I made a timetable for studying theory subjects. I am studying theory subjects by myself only. And for practical subjects I joined the classes.
Well, I studied whenever I got the time; usually I allotted at least give three to four hours daily to my studies.
- Can you share some insights on how to crack the subjects before exams?
First of all the student must maintain the written notes for every subject which will help the student for last minute revision. As BMS involves lots of theory subjects so it becomes very difficult for the student to remember each and every concept about the subject. The student must have discussion with teachers and friends to go through the concept in detail. This will help the student to remember concept more easily.
According to me if we do the study seriously then we will find that every subject is easy. But for reference Human Resources Management (HRM) and Business Ethics are easy subjects.
Tips to crack the case study:-
- 1. Collect the facts and analyze them.
- 2. Identify the main problems/ key issues and analyze
- 3. Do SWOT analysis of the case
- 4. List alternative course of action and evaluate them and then recommend the best source of action.
- Do you think BMS student require coaching classes or is self-study enough? Had you joined any coaching class for a particular subject?
Well, it depends upon the student’s capacity whether he/she needs to join the coaching classes. There are many students’ examples in front of me who never joined coaching classes for BMS they are scored in 70’s. And also there are many who scored in 60’s with one ATKT who joined or may not be joined any classes. Finally it depends upon the student capacity to grasp the knowledge from their college teachers and their willingness to do study by their self.
Yes, of course I have joined the coaching class for Financial management and Special studies in finance. Remaining subjects I have studied by myself with help of my teachers.
- Did you participate in college fests or extra-curricular activities? Do you think a BMS student can manage both studies and extra activities?
No, I did not participate in college fests, or extra-curricular activities. But I had a job in the starting month of my sem 5 studies. Again it depends upon the students potentials to manage the dual activities.
- Did you pursue any additional courses/ internships alongside BMS?
No, I am not indulging in any additional courses. My full focus and concentration is on studies only.
- Today, we often come across students committing suicide out of failure, depression or tension of exams. What do you have to say about this? Did you use any special techniques for stress management?
I have serious words to share with you in this regard.
I don’t know that why the students commit suicide because of failing in one subject. We all know that one passing certificate of any university will not decide our future. Failing in exams and in life is the part and parcel of life. It makes us stronger. According to me the term failure states us that you need to do more hard work. And the success is the lousy teacher who makes us think that we cannot fail in life. We must accept our unsuccessfulness with courage.
Yes I use special techniques for relief from stress and that technique is self-motivation. My teachers and parents states that self-motivation is best motivation and I also watch movies like 3 idiots and Guru for motivating myself.
- Do you think the number of Industrial visits should be increased for BMS Students? Which industries have you visited?
Yes, the number of industrial visits should be increased for BMS students to gain some more practical subjects. BMS as a subject is flooded with more and more theory subjects.
I visited the industry of Coco-cola, Parle-G and Hindustan Machine tools ltd.
- Do you think BMS students are flooded with assignments, projects and internal exams round the clock? What changes would you like to bring in the BMS Curriculum?
Yes, the BMS Curriculum is flooded with assignments. I think there will be no change in the projects and internal exams. Because projects helps us to gain more practical knowledge and internal exams makes BMS students more sincere as our internal marks depends upon the behavior and performance in internal exams.
The one thing that I don’t like about the BMS is too much assignments because assignments we have to write from our textbook only which is as simple as eating the food. And the students also do not take assignments so seriously as projects and internal exams.
Another thing that I want to change is that our BMS Curriculum is flooded with large subjects and we as BMS students have very less time to cover the whole portion and we also do not learn a particular subject in detail. So we must have less portion to complete but in detail.
- What message would you like to give to the next batch of BMS students?
BMS as course is not so easy to score a high percentage due to theory subjects. But you can make a history by doing regular studies and continue your education without any stress.
- What are the future plans post BMS?
I want to continue with my studies and I wish to do CA and MBA (from reputed organization).
- Any Feedback/Suggestions for BMS.co.in?
I really like the concept of BMS.co.in to have the view of BMS topper and display on the website. It will help the students to find the solution of their problems.
Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma… have the courage to follow you heart and intuition.
