“Rendezvous with MALAYSIA…by Aashiya Khan

(Students of Dept. of BMS at SIES College of Arts, Science and Commerce, Sion WEST go on an International Industrial Visit to Malaysia)

Introduction:

To know Malaysia is to love Malaysia. A bubbling, bustling melting pot of races and faiths where Malays, Indians, Chinese and many other ethnic groups live together in peace and harmony. Multiculturalism has transformed their lives with colourful festivals and treasures of cultural heritage. Malaysia’s cuisine reflects the multi-ethnic makeup of its population.

Geographically, Malaysia is divided into 13 states and 3 Federal Territories. Kuala Lumpur, being its capital with ‘Bahasa Melayu’ as the national language, but English is widely spoken as business language.Islam is the official religion of the country, but other religions are also widely practiced.

Today, Malaysia has one of the best airports, highways and telecommunication systems in Asia. The literacy rate is above 90% and poverty level is negligible. With a highly educated workforce and modern infrastructure, Malaysia attracts large foreign investment in the manufacturing and technology sectors. So, it was amongst the best destination to choose for college industrial visit.

We had an opportunity to visit some of the famous industries and learn best practices during our international industrial visit.

DAY – I:

With future management aspirations in our mind and to learn global benchmark practices, the faculties and students of B.M.S – S.I.E.S College of arts, science and commerce, visited Malaysia as part of their course curriculum. We all were excited to experience this international industrial tour and share the learning’s with our fellow friends who could not make it for this tour.

DAY – II:

Tourism has become Malaysia’s third largest source of income from foreign exchange. Reaching Kuala Lumpur, we first went to Batu Caves. Batu Caves is an iconic and popular tourist attraction in Selangor.

Site of a Hindu temple and shrine, Batu Caves attracts thousands of worshippers and tourists, especially during the annual Hindu festival, Thaipusam.

A limestone outcrop located just north of Kuala Lumpur, Batu Caves has three main caves featuring temples and Hindu shrines. Its main attraction is the large statue of the Hindu God at the entrance, besides a steep 272 climb up its steps to finally view the stunning skyline of the city centre.

Monkeys frolic around the caves, and it is a popular spot for rock climbing enthusiasts. Paintings and scenes of Hindu Gods can also be seen in the Ramayana Cave.

Moving ahead to our first industrial visit at Royal Selangor. Royal Selangor is the world’s largest pewter company. Renowned for innovative design and craftsmanship to create objects of desire in precious pewter.

Malaysian pewter is acclaimed internationally for its exquisite craftsmanship. In the days of Royal Selangor’s founder, pewter was polished with “stone leaf” (tetracera scandens), a wild tropical leaf of a fine, abrasive nature.

In recognition of its quality, Royal Selangor received a royal warrant from His Royal Highness, the Sultan of Selangor, who conferred the manufacturer, the title of ‘Royal Pewter’.

A popular attraction at the site is the giant “Tankard”, the worlds largest and listed in the Malaysian book of records and the Guinness World Book of Records. The giant tankard outside is 1.987 metres tall, weighs 1, 557 kg and has a capacity of 2, 796 litres. It has travelled round the world to places such as Canada, Australia, Singapore and China

Later we left for the famous Genting Highland. The fun never stops at this popular tourist attraction, only 45 minutes from Kuala Lumpur. Dubbed the City of Entertainment, this resort offers indoor and outdoor theme parks, an 18-hole golf course and casino. Perfect for family holiday.

DAY – III:

After having soaked in leisure at the Hotel Theme Park, we went for outdoor games and enjoyed the chilled weather and various thrilling and breath taking rides of our life time.

Post meals, we all enjoyed the beautiful cable car ride discovering the great hills with its collection of colorful temperate wild flowers, before boarding our coach for Kuala Lumpur.

Genting Highland resort has surely captivated us with its rustic charm.

DAY – IV:

This was the sweetest day of the tour for all of us since we visited the most famous Beryl’s Chocolate factory.

At Beryl’s, it’s all about delivering the best chocolates in Malaysia. To ensure their chocolates retain the same great taste every time, they use only the best ingredients. These include beans from Ghana, a globally recognized source of the best cocoa beans.
They have constantly evolved through their R&D centre, innovative designs & flavors along with new manufacturing methods.

Beryl’s Chocolate today offers more than 100 varieties of chocolate to suit your every mood and desire.

Post lunch, we did a side scene visit to King’s Palace, Merdeka Square where we explored the city’s heritage sites. The Union Jack was lowered here on 31 August 1957 marking Malaysia’s independence from colonial rule. Hence the name Merdeka, which means “Independence” in Malay. Here a 100-metre-high flagpole, reputedly the tallest in the world, proudly flies the Malaysian flag.

Our next destination was the Kuala Lumpur City Centre, the 88-storey Petronas Twin Towers, known as KLCC is one the world’s tallest twin structures. Its gleaming mega-structure was designed by Argentinian -American architect, Cesar Pelli.

Finally, we indulged in a guilt free shopping at the premier shopping mall KLCC –SURIA before concluding for the evening.

DAY – V:

This day we had an extending break-fast at the famous High 5 Bread Company. Here we learned the manufacturing process of various breads and indulged in some delicious soft, supple breads and muffins freshly baked from bakeries.

High 5 Bread Town, the first of its kind in the world was officially opened on 25th May 2005. It was certified in the Malaysia Book of Records as the “First Bread Museum”in Malaysia.

The Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Mosque in Shah Alam is one of the most stunning structures in the country which was really an amazing sight for the eyes. Commonly referred to as the ‘Blue Mosque’, it boasts the tallest minarets in the world. As we all approached the mosque, the awe-inspiring blue dome welcomed us.

Post meals we again had a happening shopping extravaganza at Mid Valley Megamall. It was a combination of 5 malls together and had something for everyone under one roof, be it for a movie fanatics, fashion and food lovers, IT fans, bowling enthusiasts, charmed readers, health and beauty conscious and many more.

Each member of the tour came with their hands full of baggage’s with various arrays of brands.

DAY – VI:

It was an exciting discovery everyday during our industrial visit. On the last day, we had a local sightseeing through coach on our way to airport and had a great experience viewing the PM’s office, Putrajaya the new town in Malaysia and finally the F1 Grand Prix before we reached the airport for our flight back to Mumbai.

Conclusion:

For the perfect learning cum holiday destination, full of surprises, eclectic cultures and natural wonders, the place is Malaysia and that’s the reason today I know why it’s called as “Malaysia – Truly Asia”.

{Terima Kasih – Thank You in Malay}
