An Interview with Harkrishan Singh Sadana, TYBMS Sem 5 Topper, N.M. College of Commerce & Economics (85.33%)
- Tell us more about yourself.
My Name is Harkrishan Singh and I am currently pursuing Bachelors of Management Studies in Narsee Monjee College. I am a fun loving person who likes to venture out different things. Playing tabla, Reading Current events, and listening to music are few of my hobbies.
- Were you expecting to top in the exams? To whom would you credit this success to?
Seriously speaking I have an objective in life, wherein “I do my best and leave the rest”. So when it came to University exams I gave my best shot and dint have any expectations regarding the result.
I would give the credit to all my professors and the coordinator at my college who taught me various subjects and made sure that I got the best guidance.
- Did you prepare religiously from day One or A few weeks before the exams?
Yes I did prepare religiously for university examinations. I always kept myself abreast with the portion by reading theory subjects and practicing practical subjects on a regular basis. This helped me a lot in 5th semester as I dint have a lot of burden when the exams approached and I could focus on areas of improvement before the exams.
- How did you allot time to different subjects?
I didn’t have a fixed timetable. I followed a flexible schedule wherein I made sure that all the subjects are covered at least once a week. Also I preferred practicing practical subjects like FM & SSF on a daily basis by taking up small topics in each of the subject.
This increased my accuracy.
- Can you share some insights on how to crack the subjects before exams?
It is not very difficult to crack subjects in BMS. Best way is to read the theory subjects extensively so that the main key points gets registered in your mind and it is very important to practice the practical subjects.
Practical subjects are very scoring in nature and they boost the overall percentage.
- Do you think BMS student require coaching classes or is self-study enough? Had you joined any coaching class for a particular subject?
I think self-study is enough for theory subjects. But for subjects like FM and SSF it is advisable to take up coaching. Because coaching classes make you practice good number of problems, which is not possible on an individual level. Even I had taken up coaching for FM & SSF and I noticed a visible difference, as I was very comfortable when it came to these two subjects and I could focus more on other theory subjects.
- Did you participate in college fests or extra-curricular activities? Do you think a BMS student can manage both studies and extra activities?
Yes I did participate in extra curricular activities. I am a tabla player, so I took part in various instrumental competitions at different college festivals like Umang, Kshitij, Malhar etc. Also I was a part of Indian Band team in my college.
- Did you pursue any additional courses/ internships alongside BMS?
Yes I did my summer internship with RBI. It gave me hands on experience in the financial and banking sector. I prepared a project on ‘Productivity and Profitability Analysis of banks’ during my internship period. It was a great learning experience.
Also I did few additional courses like Basics of Capital markets from BSE and
Basics of General Insurance from NM College.
And I would advise others as well to take up internships as it provides a very good industry exposure and helps gain practical knowledge.
- Today, we often come across students committing suicide out of failure, depression or tension of exams. What do you have to say about this? Did you use any special techniques for stress management?
I think whenever a student is stressed out due to studies, he/she should take some time off and talk to few people. They should do those things that they often pursue when given some time off. This acts as a stress buster and helps them get back to studies positively
- Do you think the number of Industrial visits should be increased for BMS Students? Which industries have you visited?
Yes I think the number of industrial visits should be increased, as this would help students gain more practical knowledge. This would also help students to connect their theory subjects to actual practical applications and industry practices.
- Do you think BMS students are flooded with assignments, projects and internal exams round the clock? What changes would you like to bring in the BMS Curriculum?
No I don’t think that students are flooded with projects and assignments. In fact the very reason projects and assignments are given is because it helps students gain an insight of the subject in a much better way. Projects and assignments should be taken up positively and not as a burden.
- What message would you like to give to the next batch of BMS students?
I would just like to say that enjoy your course, be a multi tasking person and not just a bookworm. Venture out different things, meet people, take part in activities, and have a good learning experience as this course is the best platform to build an overall personality.
- What are the future plans post BMS?
I intend to work for a couple of years and then go in for higher studies. I would like to gain specialization in Finance when I pursue my higher studies.
- Any Feedback/Suggestions for BMS.co.in?
I feel that BMS.co.in is a very unique initiative, and probably amongst the first of its kind. They should continue with their work and keep us posted regarding various details related to BMS giving us insights of the course.
