Mumbai: It was reported a few days back that the Mumbai University colleges, facing enormous admission rush may not actually bring out a third merit list and even if they do it would be no more than a short list.
The fears turned true, when on Saturday students who had flocked in great numbers hoping against hope for a place in the third merit list returned utterly disappointed and empty-handed, reported.
Indeed the colleges of the university plagued by the demand for seats far exceeding their availability, either did not put up the third lists at all or put up a list with the names of only a handful of students. Thus while it was an almighty relief for the students who managed to get through by virtue of the third merit list, it was heartbreak for most.
“We displayed a list, but we can’t really specify a cut-off as such because there were just a couple of seats left in every course. In some courses, there were only one or two seats left,” said Ashok Wadia, principal of Jai Hind College.
“Our Bcom seats were filled in the first merit list itself and the remaining courses were filled by the second merit list,” said T A Shiware, principal of Hinduja College on the other hand.
At the elite St Xavier’s College, while there was no third list for degree colleges, it came out with its first list of Bachelor of Mass Media (BMM) and Bachelor of Management Studies (BMS) courses, for which the college conducts its own entrance exams.
At KC College, the third merit list for Bachelor of Commerce (Bcom) course was filled by only in-house students, leaving others disappointed. “I have been coming to college to check every list only to see the seats being filled up by in-house students. If this is the case, the college should at least inform us on their website that seats won’t be available for outside students. It is very disheartening to come and go back disappointed,” said Masooma Bagasrawala, whose child had applied at KC College.
However, significantly even in-house students of colleges faced the brunt the admission rush. Janki Simzia, who completed her junior college at KC, said, “I haven’t got through admissions here despite being an in-house student. Many of my junior college friends have also not got through. We didn’t apply to any other college. Now we are clueless as to what to do.”
Those who applied only to a selected few colleges and did not get through even one, now don’t know what to do. “I had only applied to Jai Hind, KC, HR and Hinduja, but I haven’t got through any of them. I completed my junior college at Khalsa, but I did not apply there and have already taken my leaving certificate. I don’t know what to do now,” said Sneha Savla.
Some assurance for the students though
Parag Thakker, vice-principal of HR College in this regard said, “After the admission process of the third merit list, colleges will display a list of vacant seats. Students might not get the college or course of their choice, but they will definitely get a seat.” A senior official at Mumbai University said, “After the candidates in the third list get admissions, we will extend the admission dates so students who have missed out can seek admission in colleges where seats are still vacant.”
