Report by On Device claims that Whatsapp has overtaken Facebook and BBM as leading mobile messaging service. The report surveyed around 4,000 smartphone owners in 5 countries to understand the popularity of social messaging compared to calling, texting and email on mobile phones. According to the results of the survey, 44 percent used WhatsApp atleast once a week, compared to 35 percent using Facebook messenger.  However, the survey isn’t the most definitive as the 5 countries do not include many European countries. Social messaging seems to the most popular way for mobile phone users to stay in touch and more people are upgrading from feature phones to smartphones.
“It is a trend to prefer social messaging over traditional calling and SMS. People use these apps and social networking sites to stay connected with each other. Whatsapp is more popular among youth than Facebook as it is easy to chat with friends , share photos and send voice messages over phone and keep ourselves updated. I Â use Whatsapp 2-3 times a day, mostly in the morning and at night to chat till 1am ;)” says Rahul M. Das, Third Year student of S.I.C.E.S.
