What are price floors?

0

A price floor or minimum price control sets a price below which a good or service cannot be sold e.g. wage legislation, NCPB for maize.

In order to guarantee producers a certain return on their sales, a government can impose minimum prices below which the price cannot legally fall. This is common for agricultural products. Price floor set above the market equilibrium causes a glut since equilibrium price already hurts producers.
