Name- Dr. Surekha Verma

College- JVM MEHTA COLLEGE, AIROLI

Tell us something about yourself

Well, I came into management faculty by default. I am basically a doctorate in English literature. I feel it’s important for management students to imbibe an aesthetic sense too along with leadership qualities in order to inculcate an all round personality development.

Tell us something about your college

We are situated in Airoli and have completed 10 years in 2011. The Department of Management Studies specially came into being in the year 2007. As of now, 2 batches have passed the TY University exams and we are in the process of bringing out the third.

When did you join this profession? What inspired you to choose this line?

It’s been 8 years since I joined this profession. The prospect of shaping and training young and vibrant minds excite me.

As a Coordinator, do you also teach any subject?

If yes, which subjects you teach and which you love the most?

Yes. I teach communication studies to first year students and I am in the process of taking up to teaching IMTP at TY level.

How are the roles and responsibilities of a Coordinator different from that of a

faculty? Do you like being a Faculty or a Coordinator? Which helps you to connect more with students?

The role of a coordinator has less to do with teaching and more to do with administration. As a coordinator, (as the word implies), one has to co-ordinate different aspects of the department. I think the role of faculty helps one more to connect with students as more interaction is needed to build a close rapport. Here, I am talking about full-time faculties. Besides, since you are teaching more subjects, you automatically become a familiar face among students with whom they can easily connect.

Who in your life has influenced the most?

My spiritual Guru and my parents have influenced me the most. My mother was into academics as well. Through her, I seem to have imbibed an academic culture.

What should BMS/Management education mean to a student?

It should mean getting a hang of management duties in this age of cut-throat competition apart from the knowledge of syllabus. They should also understand that a tremendous amount of discipline is needed as the management duties in a corporate sector and elsewhere have become extremely challenging and competitive.

Tell us something about your college fests/events and extra-curricular activities?  Each year, we organise an inter-collegiate festival for students called PANORAMA. Till date, we have organised two such festivals with a great amount of success. Besides, we have a number of activities at the departmental level. For example, we had an inter-cultural activity for students wherein they brought food from different states. Besides, the students recently brought the ingredients and created a beautiful presume and sold it to a few people in the campus as a small demonstration of entrepreneurship.

Do you believe that it should be made compulsory for students to manage both

studies and be a part of college fests/events?

Yes, because ultimately they will have to balance a lot of activities in life apart from meeting deadlines. Besides, they need to learn team spirit and will be called upon to organise a number of activities and events. Why not let them start learning the process now itself?

Tell us something about your college students’ performances?

The performance so far has been above average. Still, we need to do a lot more.

What are your future plans for the college?

The students after passing out apart from being well placed should come out  very confident, competent and positive as a person. Therefore, I feel to introducing Yoga and other visualising sessions apart from introducing a virtual company may help the students a lot.

As a person, what is your mission/aim in life?

Today, we are at the threshold of a massive change in the world order. I wish to be prepared for the same. I do not know for sure what will prepare me for it but I feel experiencing spirituality may help a lot in this direction.

Does your college provide any placement assistance to BMS students?

Yes, we have a placement cell which takes care of the placements of all the students.

What are the prospects after BMS?

A student apart from pursuing masters degree in management can opt for any stream be it event management, academics, research and project, fine arts, performing arts, mass media, enterpreneurship, web designing etc. The sky is the limit for such students.

What message would you like to give to BMS students?

Make the attributes of RESPONSIBILITY and DISCIPLINE very exciting, interesting and creative.
