According to a survey by psychologists at the University of Rochester in the US, online dating is the second most common way of starting a relationship after meeting through friends. The internet holds great promise for helping adults form healthy and supportive romantic relationships, and those relationships are one of the best predictors of emotional and physical health. Online dating offers the dream of removing the historic obstacles to true love.
The web is flooded with sites for online dating and just at a click of the mouse an individual can race through innumerable profiles which vaguely look similar. Most of them have a very nice and appealing picture and the details filled look seemingly attractive. These sites are an opportunity for people to meet prospective lovers and light up their love life.
What is disturbing is that the trend doesn’t seem to die but is rather catching up. More and more people are growing recluse in approaching a person face to face and would rather prefer a chat on the web portal. These sites are a great opportunity for those who do not have friends, an active social life, etc. Such people are generally reserved and do not have the confidence to communicate thus online chatting helps them.
The flip side to online dating is that many people are using this portal in the wrong way to cheat and dupe people. Playing with their sentiments and emotions. This not only causes grave hurt to an individual but also breaks their self esteem. There was a case recently where one of the girls filmed the online act of her male friend getting undressed. This causes a lot of mental and emotional trauma.
Internet has brought a lot of opportunities to meet new people but it also comes with a big risk since one never knows how genuine the person would be going by the online profile. Especially where emotions are involved it becomes difficult to take chances. The online dating scenario is fun for some and game for some but it is serious business for a few. Be careful!
