Management Careers in Media
Although many management graduates identify the Media and entertainment sector as one for the creative, arty, and anti-corporate types, large media houses like Times Group, Sony-VIACOM, IBN, ZEE, and many others need management professionals who have an understanding of the media business. Even during economic downturns, the M&E sector generally does well. Why? Because even in those tough times, people don’t stop watching the TV, or go to the movies, or use the Internet and the Social Media. With media and communication sector growing at a rate of 14% per annum, expected to reach 1,94,000 crores in revenue by 2019 (data from FICCI), it is time you, especially BMS graduates look seriously at media as a career option.
During a chat with a top industry professional, I was given a very interesting insights. When these media corporates hire regular MBAs, they have to spend a considerable amount of time and energy in training them to handle media products, and help the understand the media business. And when they hire artists, or students from media who are not trained in management functions, they have to be imparted management training.
The solution lies in getting yourself trained in management in media and communication. There is a whole big media world out there waiting to hire management professionals with a media background. Because media products are different, their business, and economics is also different. Do think about it.
