Chetana College TYBMS student Payal Balsara died on 25th December 2012 in the early morning at Guru Nanak Hospital, Bandra (E).
She was stabbed in the college with a kitchen knife by her boyfriend Nikhil Bankar who also studied in the same class.
After attacking her, Nikhil killed himself. Sources say that Payal had ended her friendship with Nikhil several weeks ago. This outraged him to kill Payal and end his own life.
On Tuesday afternoon, relatives and friends lined up outside her Prabhat colony residence to pay last respects. The victim’s uncle, Praveen Balsara, described her as the darling of everyone in her Santacruz (east) colony, where she had stayed since her childhood. “She wanted to do an MBA and the join her father’s business,” said Balsara. Another relative said she was keen on going abroad for further studies.
“She grew up in front of us and now she is gone. We are finding it difficult to believe that such a tragic incident has occurred,” said a neighbour.
Doctors said Payal developed gangrene in her bowels. “A day after the incident, she was recovering, but then she got septicaemia and gangrene. The assailant used a kitchen knife, which may have been rusted and hence the infection,” said Dr Narendra Sharma, who manages the hospital’s ICU.
Payal had also sustained a cut on her leg. “She had blood clot in her leg for which we operated her. During surgery, we found that her abdomen had bloated and had to remove the gangrenous bowels to reduce the spread of infection,” said Dr Sharma, adding that the infection caused renal shutdown.
At Sion hospital, where an autopsy was conducted, a doctor from the forensic department said: “She died of haemorrhagic shock syndrome.”
Payal, a student of Chetana College, Bandra (East), was stabbed eight times by Nikhil Bankar in the college premises on Saturday, over a suspected soured relationship. Bankar killed himself after the incident.
A neighbour of the victim said: “We are still finding it difficult to believe that such a tragic thing happened to her.” Another neighbour described Payal as outgoing. “Everyone in the locality recognised her and she had several friends,” the neighbour said.
Bankar’s friends, on the other hand, said he had become increasingly withdrawn over the last three years. “He used to meet us in the evening and enjoyed cricket. However, this changed. He kept to himself and did not communicate with colony friends,” said Akshay Satare, 19.
Investigations have revealed that the boy did not spend much time at home. “His parents were also not aware that he was angry about their relationship souring,” said Avaduth S Chawan, senior inspector, Kherwadi police.
Mother collapses at the prayer meeting held for management student stabbed to death by boyfriend
Praveena Balsara entered Hiravati Hall in Santacruz West on Thursday evening to be greeted by her smiling daughter, frozen in 10-foot-tall picture. Praveena swayed and collapsed, and relatives gathered at the prayer meeting held for Payal rushed to her, fearing the worst. Praveena was rushed to her brother Raju Tailor’s home in Kalina, where she came to and is now resting.
Payal (21), a final year Bachelor of Management Studies student in Bandra’s Chetna College was murdered, stabbed by her former boyfriend. After battling for life for three days, Payal succumbed to injuries on Tuesday.
On Thursday, her mother was still in denial mode. “She still hasn’t accepted that Payal is dead. She keeps telling us to call her cellphone and the college and find where she is. She has been holding on to Payal’s clothes and refuses to let go,” said Raju.
“At the hall, she was overwhelmed with grief. We were afraid at the time and took her home but she is still in very bad health. Payal’s death has hit her very hard,” Raju said.
According to the family, Payal had briefly dated classmate Nikhil Banker but had broken off with him after they objected. Nikhil was unable to stomach it, began to harass her. Payal had submitted a written complaint to the college authorities as well as the police. The college had spoken to Banker’s parents and closed the matter by directing him to submit a written application that he would stay away from her. However, in a frenzied and unprovoked attack on Saturday, Nikhil stabbed her several times in the college corridor in the presence of other students before stabbing himself.
Both were rushed to Guru Nanak Hospital in Bandra east where an emergency operation was performed on Payal. Nikhil succumbed to his injuries.
The condition of Payal, who was injured in the intestine and legs, and whose both hands were fractured, worsened after developing an infection in the intestines and had to be operated upon a second time on Monday after doctors said she had gangrene and had a clot in her leg. Early on Tuesday morning, she breathed her last.
“At all times, doctors assured us she would live, so we do not know why she died. Her father Bharat called me early in the morning that Payal was sinking and a little while after I reached there, she died,” continued Raju. He is unimpressed with the treatment given to her at the hospital.
“We incurred an expenditure of Rs 6 lakh for three days. I do not understand how two surgeries could have cost that much. On Tuesday, when I went to pay the bills, the accountant told me the accounting section was closed and so he could not tell me the exact bill amount but told me to pay Rs 2 lakh. Later, he said I had to pay Rs 1 lakh more. Today, they called us again to say some payments remain and told us to pay on Friday,” Raju said.
He also feels that the college authorities should have taken stricter action against Banker after Payal’s complaint. “What good is a written assurance to stay away from Payal? I admit, Payal may have been naïve when she met him. However, when other students also began to feel there was something wrong with the boy, the authorities did nothing,” Raju said.
Payal’s parents live in Mira Road and Payal lived with her uncle Raju at his Kalina home as the college was nearer. “She used to go home every Saturday and return to me on Sunday night. The day the incident happened, she was supposed to go to her mother,” said Raju.
