Tips for Personal Interviews

0

Personal Interview is an important tool in the selection procedure. A set of questions are asked to judge the interviewee’s interest, keenness and genuineness.

The panel will throw questions that may include the following areas

  • personal – may include questions on attitude or behaviour
  • academic – eg your favourite subject, project in the final year.
  • work experience – questions on skills learnt at work, work responsibilities

They may also ask you questions related to the choice of the course or college in case you are applying to a PG programme or a specific college / course. eg. Why TISS or Why the HR programme at XLRI?

Most panelists focus on asking you questions that are there on the form. Don’t try to be defensive on tough questions. Try and keep your cool and smile. Be prepared with your introduction as the panelist may begin the interview with the question, “Tell me something about yourself.” Let the answer be well prepared, crisp, interesting and offer opportunities to the panel to ask you more questions. Don’t let any of your answers appear rote memorized.

If you are a fresher, prepare on your favourite subject / topic. For people with work experience, prepare for questions related to your work experience.

If you mention you are good at something say Math then you better be excellent at Math or you say you have a hobby like reading, and then you should know a little more than someone who does not enjoy the same hobby.

Also you have to be aware of Current Affairs, names of ministers and heads of state, organizations, etc.

The key to do well in the interview is thorough preparation. Most people who do well at an interview are those who are prepared for the interview. Being prepared dislays interest in the course. Also, when you are prepared  you will display the right attitude and confidence. This will help you do well in the interview.
