Prof. Rahul Shah

“What? You don’t want to come inside?”, he asked with a smile. I was 5 minutes late for his first lecture, the door was closed, I tried to peep inside and to my surprise my wild class was sitting very silently that made me halt for a couple of seconds and wonder over it, when suddenly these words fell into my ears. Prof. Rahul Shah noticed me standing near the door and asked me to get in.

So we had a new professor for the subject ‘Service Sector Management’ in semester 5. I soon got to know that he was a visiting faculty in our college. He introduced himself and I came to know the following things about him.

He is a professor in Mumbai university since 2006 and has been running ‘Reliable Chemicals’ as a Managing Director since 2004. He completed his M.Com from Mumbai University and MBA in Marketing and Finance from Wales Institute, Cardiff.

A distinct personality, a professor by profession teaching in 17 colleges with his own published book on Accounts and Economics. He is a reserved person during day time. But when it comes to music and Aryans his passion cannot be matched. A versatile Roto Drums player and no one can match his punchy style of playing. An ardent student of the great drummer is Shri. Pankaj Sharma.

I will not describe him in common words but by the effect he created and we felt,by seven wonders that he created in our class.

1) I AM SUCH A REGULAR STUDENT!-

Missing his single lecture meant a loss of an opportunity to grab lots of practical knowledge. I knew I will not find them in any of the textbooks and thus I became a regular student. He always asks us a question, lists all our answers and finally declares all that bookish knowledge unacceptable and then comes his answer based on true practical experience of real world!

2) BACK TO SCHOOL!-

He made us write notes, cover our books and label them, make chart, write assignments and we could feel the discipline that we maintained when we were at school. We did not even realise that slowly and gradually we completed our entire portion!

3) WHERE ARE THE MOVIE LOVERS!

Saturdays were unofficial holiday for the movie lovers of our class but if his lecture was at stake the love for the movies disappeared!

4) TINA COULD SPEAK!

Even the students that never used to respond to any question and were considered as dumb, actively participated in his lecture, that is the magic and comfort one feels in his lecture!

5) TIME TO KNOCK YOUR BRAINS!

All he wants from us is that we start thinking, no matter the ideas are realistic and feasible or not but he wanted us to think of new ideas and he was successful too. He always left our class injecting a question in our mind and before his next lecture, a nice debate session held in our class.

6) HE HAS A POINT!

Its from him that we learnt that thinking out of the box would make ways for new opportunities. His approach to reacting situation is different and logical. One such instance was when I got the answer of my query that whether going for own business would be beneficial or problematic. He said that he was also reluctant initially, as all his relatives in business said handling business is too complex and thus not a good option, to which he questioned them that if it was so, why do they don’t leave this field! He said if you aspire to make your own bungalow and work without any interference business is the best for you!

7) BEWARE! WE ARE FOLLOWERS!

No matter how good the teacher is, you will always find some students disliking them, but for him we all were followers. It amazed me how aggressively my classmates replied to anyone speaking against him.

You don’t need any personal connection or informal talks to get inspired by him, the confidence he carries on his face, the experience that reflects from his words, and the respect that gets automatically generated in your heart from him itself makes you feel that if you achieve that success, respect and knowledge in your life, only then you are worth of being called alive. For me, the person who created these wonders is the Eighth wonder of the world.
