Introduction J.R.D TATA known as the ‘MAN OF ALL SEASONS’. Who was He? -Owned India’s largest private business house. -Famous for his degree of discipline & perfection -Owner of Tata Air lines ‘Air India’. -He was awarded the Bharat Ratna award in 1992. -He Helped in setting up ‘Tata Memorial Hospital’, ‘TISS’, ‘TIFR’, etc. His Goals and Ambition -From the tender age of five, J.R.D. was interested in flying planes. -He then bought two planes ‘Puss Moth’ and flew solo from Karachi to India -This is how he gave birth to India’s first airline services. -This is how he accomplished his goal / ambition for flying. Starting with just a desire to fly plane inspired by his neighbor to starting with his own airlines company His nature and personality -J.R.D was a very self disciplined man with great stewardship. -He was very ambitious and was stubborn in achieving his goals. -In spite of all the fame his feet were always on ground. -The core of his life’s philosophy was embedded in: “Never start with diffidence, Always start with confidence.” -He also believed in pursuing his passion with compassion by stating that: “To be a leader, you’ve got to lead human beings with affection.” His Professional Background -He was more comfortable with French than English. -He found himself as a fine business man after his father’s death. Therefore he joined Tata steel with his first salary of Rs.750. -Later he took over the Taj Mahal hotel and thus gave us The Taj Group of Hotels that we know of today. -Then later he started with the first airline company of India. -On July 1938 he was unanimously elected as the chairman of Tata industries. -He had an empire of 95 companies under him at one point time. Under his leadership TATA had revenues to the tune of Rs.10000 crores + Some of J.R.D’s Achievements -J.R.D secured a commercial pilot’s license. The first to receive one in India. -He stood second in The Aga khan Aviation race for flying between India and United Kingdom.He inaugurated -The Tata Airline Service by flying from Karachi to Mumbai. -He got appointed as the Chairman of ‘Tata &Sons’ on July 26th, 1938 at the age of 34. Most of the entrepreneurs make it only up to senior management level at this age -In 1955 he was awarded Padma Vibhushan. -In 1958-59 he was elected as the chairman of I.A.T.A. -He was made air commander of I.A.F. -He was then made the vice president of I.A.F. -J.R.D was then presented with Tony Jannus award. -In 1986 he was awarded with the “Bessemer Medal Of the Institution of Metals”, London. -In 1988 he was awarded with Daniel Guggenheim medal. -In 1992 he was also awarded with the UN population award. Negative aspects of J.R.D. TATA -His leadership style shouted out ‘It’s my way or the high way’. -He never let others participate in the decision making and hence played a one man show in the company. -J.R.D. never made any comprehensive succession plan.
