National Lighthouse Day is celebrated on August 07, 2014. On August 7, 1789, the US Bureau of Lighthouses was created by the 9th Act of the first Congress which placed lighthouses under federal control.
Lighthouses mark dangerous coastlines, hazardous shoals, reefs, safe entries to harbors, and can also assist in aerial navigation.
