Following the Third Year Bachelor of Management Studies (TYBMS) exam paper leak that came to light on Friday the University of Mumbai (MU) has decided to conduct a re-exam in mid-December.

However the date of the same will be declared on Tuesday by the Controller of examination (COE)of MU.

The decision to conduct a re-exam was taken in a three-hour-long meeting of the varsity’s Board Of Examination (BOE) on Sunday. While it was said that the paper was leaked and distributed on Thursday night, the matter came to light on Friday morning when Prof Vilas Shinde, the varsity’s COE, received a text message informing about the code of the question paper along with the questions. On comparing the questions mentioned in the message and the actual exam paper, all six questions across both sections of the two-hour long, 60-mark paper, were similar.

Around 10,000 students appeared for the human resources management paper on Friday, which was the last one of the fifth semester exam.

Shinde said, “Initially we thought it was a rumour, but we took it seriously and checked the question paper bundle and found the questions were the same. By the time we could take any action students had already appeared for the exam. We immediately filed a police complaint.”

The varsity and the Board of Examination has set up a committee to probe the matter.

Dilip Karande, senior senator, MU, said, “This is shocking. This is the second time a paper has been leaked this year. In the past three years, we have been witnessing incidents like examination section forgets to print papers or send them to a particular college and so on.”

Varsity to conduct re-exam in Dec after BMS paper leak

– The Times of India Report

MUMBAI: Third year students of (BMS) will have to re-appear for the human resources management (HRM) paper after it was leaked on Friday. Around 10,000 students will be affected by the re-exam.

The decision was taken by the board of examination (BoE) of the University of Mumbai on Sunday.

Friday’s incident has also prompted the university to consider automated and more secure ways of sending question papers to exam centres.

Controller of examination Vilas Shinde said, “The BoE has resolved to conduct a re-exam only for the HRM paper by mid-December. Students will be informed about the schedule this week. ”

Shinde added, “The university has filed an FIR and set up a committee to conduct an internal inquiry after the vice-chancellor’s committee, headed by management council member S T Gadade, submitted a report confirming the leak.”

The university has filed a complaint under the Maharashtra Universities Act, 1994, and the Maharashtra Prevention of Malpractices Act, 1982. The university refused to divulge any information about the paper-setter. “Stringent action will be taken against those found guilty,” said an official.

Shinde said the BoE will meet again to discuss different ways in which question papers can be sent to colleges in a secure manner. “We will consider automated and secure methods of sending question papers to avoid leaks in future. Emails are not a secure mode. We’ll have to consider options like setting up a separate server to send the paper. We’ll come up with some solution,” he said.

HRM was the last exam for the third year students of BMS. A night before the exam, several students allegedly received messages containing questions. Question papers were also distributed outside a college in Bandra. After a message was forwarded to a youth Congress member, he informed university officials.

Officials initially believed that it could be a rumour; however,

The leak was confirmed after the question paper bundle was opened at 10.30am. The forwarded message even carried the question paper code used for the exam.

A student from SIES College said, “It is not a difficult theory paper and there is a gap of three weeks between the re-exam, so there won’t be any problem. It is a fair decision.”

This is the second case of paper leak since 2008, said Shinde. “Last year, a professor of SIES College set the same question paper for university exam that was set for their prelims. The university had conducted a re-exam then,” he added.
