 exam tips

Dear Students,

The OR Paper consists of 5 chapters divided into 4 major units. The numerical of the following chapters need to be done well

  1. Graphical LPP- formulation and graphical solution
  2. Simplex- Minimization method
  3. Sensitivity (IMP)
  4. Assignment- Minimization, maximization and restricted route type
  5. VAM -Transportation (including MODI and degeneracy)
  6. Decision sciences- tree diagram, EMV, EPPI, EOL
  7. Maximin, Minimax, Alpha , Laplace and Minimax regret in Decision theory
  8. CPM- Floats and Forward and backward path computations
  9. PERT
  10. Crashing

OR paper would contain 5 questions each of 15 marks. Assignment and transportation would be asked in one main question. The tentative pattern of paper would be as follows

Q1- Graphical LPP, Simplex LPP, 3 small concepts (Solve any 2)

Q2- Transportation, assignment, 3 small concepts (solve any 2)

Q3- CPM, PERT, Crashing (Solve any 2)

Q4- Computation of EPPI,EMV,EOL; Minimax Laplace alpha and Minimax regret; Decision tree (Solve any 2)

Q5- Case study:-               Case study is expected from the following chapters

Transportation (VAM may be solved. MODI and then optimization need to be done)

PERT or Crashing

Sensitivity analysis (Maximization simplex fully or partially solved)- Highly expected

Time management is a key in OR paper.

The following questions need to be done well for theory

  1. Constraints in LPP
  2. Infeasibility in Graphical and Simplex
  3. Redundancy in graphical and simplex
  4. Iso profit line in graphical
  5. Degeneracy in simplex
  6. Slack, surplus and artificial variables in simplex
  7. Shadow prices in simplex
  8. Degeneracy in transportation
  9. Methods of doing transportation sum
  10. Hungarian method in assignment problem
  11. Diff between transportation and assignment
  12. Types of float in CPM
  13. Critical and sub critical paths
  14. Objectives of crashing
  15. Updating
  16. 3 Time estimate in PERT
  17. CPM vs PERT
  18. Decision making under risk and uncertainty
  19. Decision tree
  20. Perfect information in decision theory
