About Nelson Mandela Day:

1) Nelson Mandela International Day is celebrated to remember Mandela’s achievements in working towards conflict resolution, human rights, peace and reconciliation.

3) The day inspires people to uphold the values of Mandela like democracy, freedom, equality, diversity, reconciliation and respect.

4) People around the world observe Nelson Mandela International Day / Mandela Day by participating in many activities like volunteering, sports, art, education, music and culture to honor Mandela’s works and promote his different projects.

5) Nelson Mandela Day is not a public holiday but a global observance to support Nelson Mandela’s charitable organizations / charity work like raising awareness about HIV / AIDS and other humanitarian work.

About Nelson Mandela:

6) Nelson Mandela was one of the most well-known anti-apartheid activists in South Africa. 

7) He was jailed in 1964 for leading the liberation movement against apartheid and for his fight for human rights to live in freedom.

8) After his release from the prison, he continued addressing racial issues in his country and supported reconciliation initiatives.

9) Due to his constant efforts, he became South Africa’s President in 1994 and remained in office as President until 1999. He also won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993.

10) He died at his home in Johannesburg on 5 December 2013. The first Mandela Day was launched in New York on 18 July 2009  to mark Nelson Mandela’s contribution to peace through his active involvement in international democracy and addressing racial issues.
