Cardiac means near, around, or part of the heart and "cardiac" arises from the Greek word "cardio" meaning related to the guts.

A "Cardiac Monitor" is a special monitor created to count, display, don’t forget how often the premature baby’s heart is beating plus the baby’s breathing patterns. Each time a premature baby’s pulse rate drops below 100 bpm or raises above 200 beats per minute a security alarm will sound alerting the concern givers of the problem. The concern givers can view the premature baby’s breathing and heart constantly whilst the monitor tracks even the smallest changes.

The cardiac monitor resembles a TV screen with leads and electrodes appearing out of your machine and connecting to the premature baby. The leads appear like cables or wires coming from the machine and fastening on the electrodes, and also the electrodes appear like patches that come with your premature baby’s skin. The screen graphs the gathered information in a wave-graph form using the vertical height with the waves showing the volt strength of each one beat, along with the horizontal width in the waves showing enough time passing in between each beat.

One kind of cardiac monitoring is an electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG) which is employed to detect problems from the heart such as skipped heartbeats, heart damage, vitamin, mineral & electrolyte imbalances, and overall health conditions with the heart. The electrocardiogram takes information from an electrocardiograph monitoring the person, is really a graphic interpretation of the information, and prints out the information for easier reading and interpretation.

Another kind of cardiac monitoring can be a transthoracic echocardiogram (TTE), an ultrasound in the heart. An echocardiogram (ECHO) takes pictures of the guts, and is also a fantastic diagnostic tool for doctors to quickly assess many heart disease without invasive procedures. This machine monitors the center valves, strength of heart muscle contractions, cardiac tissue, blood circulation, and exactly how quickly the blood is flowing through the heart.
