joy of giving

‘True religion …is giving and finding one’s happiness by bringing happiness into the lives of others.’

As the beautiful quote sums up the meritorious deed of charity is highly praised by every religion. If we take the five major religions, all of them have a special mention about the Joy of Giving selflessly. The Bible says, “Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.” The Holy Quran asserts, “You cannot attain to righteousness unless you spend out of what you love”. The Bhagvat Gita explains, “Charity given out of duty, without expectation of return, at the proper time and place and to a worthy person is considered to be in the mode of goodness and noble cause.” Even Buddhism considers charity as an act to reduce personal greed and so what a person owns should instead be used for the benefit and happiness of others; his loved ones as well as those who need his help. Sikhism advocates that to fight sins, all we need is the spiritual weapons of contentment, charity, kindness, positive energy and humility. While each of these religions defines the virtue of charity in all its glory, the important thing is that of giving, you don’t need any religion. Being born as a human, we just need to be a little sensitive to the less privileged people around us. In all the festive revelry, just spare a thought and experience the joy of reaching out to them with your heart and mind as well. Giving a person out of your compassion and kindness when you realize that someone’s happiness makes you happy.

The Joy of Giving

There is nothing more refreshing, more inspiring, more wonderful than the smile on the face of someone you have just done something helpful for or when they receive a gift. There is an immense feeling of pride that rushes over us when we have given someone a gift that they might have needed, loved or enjoy greatly. If you ask people like Mother Teresa “why they give” or “what make them serve the needy”, the readiest answers offer to the mystery. “God wants me to. I feel better about myself. Others need, and I have. I want to share. It’s only right. A hazy halo encircles these good-hearted answers, and if we bring it into focus, then it seems true that “Giving takes you out of yourself. You expand beyond your limitations that are being always self-occupied. I want this, I want that, I have to achieve more, me this, me that… and somewhere along those lines you are slowly and slowly loosing yourself! You might think you are successful, but do you have the character? Unfortunately a person’s character is what the actual prosperity dwells on. It is something we achieve at every step of life, with ups and downs of our life, and something we would be remembered for and that’s what sharing, giving and caring gives you. You feel the joy of it once you feel it with a pure and clean heart, you will never again hesitate to give or share. We can feel the real joy of giving when we’re doing something for others knowing that we’re simply doing it for ourselves-we’re doing it for our own joy!!

There is a lot of joy people can experience by giving. People might feel good about themselves as they are able to help their communities. The tradition of taking and giving has been established in our society since a long time ago. We often hear people saying: “What goes around comes around”, “the more you give, the more you get”. Some churches encourage people to contribute their income by tithing – giving 10% of their income to church which will use the fund to help the needy. Some people believe that giving is like “energy” that cannot be destroyed. The energy of giving will just go around in other forms, be passed from one person to the other.
