It came as no surprise when Rehasha Kittur, the teacher’s favourite and the most co-operative class representative of Bhavan’s College, stood first in the recently declared semester 5 TyBms results. Being featured in the ranker’s category was nothing new for Ms. Kittur as she has achieved this feat in her SyBms as well. The following are the excerpts of an interview of this ambitious Bhavanite.

Name – REHASHA KITTUR

College Name –  BHAVANS COLLEGE, ANDHERI

Course Name – BACHELOR OF MANAGEMENT STUDIES (BMS)

GPA / Percentage: 7.00/  78.14%

  • Why did you choose to do BMS?

Coming from a science background and wanting to take up commerce field came as a shock to my parents. After rigorous brainstorming sessions we came to a few options , one of which was bms. It is a flexible course and offers you hands on experience of the real world, it enables you to get into a wide range of fields right from production to marketing of products and services.

  • Whom will you credit your success to?

This includes my family; they have motivated me on my path to success but still instilled the values that have kept me grounded. Also my faculty in college have been very supportive throughout the year. All queries that i had was answered very spontaneously. Lastly, the colleagues / friends that i have had have in their own way contributed to this success of mine.

  • Is there any advice you would like to give to the next year’s batch?

It’s basically not the amount of time we spent with books but the quality of time we have. Saying this i would also like to mention that students must prepare right from the start since there is not much time later on. Also participate in activities that motivate you and boost your confidence.

  • Do you follow any specific way to prepare for your exams?

Adopt a correct method to prepare for your examinations. Keep a schedule and stick to it. Studying for long hours does not really help. Take intervals that brighten your mood.

  • Presentations form a very integral part of BMS. Any comments on how to ace them?

Presentations form a very integral part of bms and i feel every student should put their heart and soul into it. Not only does it build self confidence but also gives you the opportunity to touch your creative side. One piece of advice i would like to give all readers of this article is that no matter what kind of group you have; one that has every member working, no one except you works, dominating members, whatever, stick with them and make sure you work your way around it. Because the tougher people you get the more you will learn. Bms at the end of the day gives us a small insight on working in the corporate world.

  • Any words of wisdom as to how to write the paper?

Be as fast as you can be while writing the paper.  Be concise, crisp and clear. The examiners do not want quantity but quality. They need to know whether you have understood the topic so try explaining your points with examples. This will help you score maximum marks.

  • Would you like to give any advice regarding how to crack case studies?

Reading of the case studies that have come in the previous years is very essential. It might be the most scoring part in the paper but students consider it at the last and hence this is where there are chances we lose maximum marks.

  • What are your thoughts about making diagrams, tables, etc in the papers? Do you feel it helps you to fetch extra marks?

Partially, yes. Your content and how you present it, matters. You can’t say you score extra marks, but definitely score maximum marks.

  • As per you, what is optimum time one needs to start studying for their exams? How much time should they spend studying on a daily basis?

This depends on a person’s grasping power. If you have a good grasping capacity you may start a little late . Even if you spend just two hours per day studying ; its sufficient  if you are focused and have given your 100%.

  • What do you do to combat stress, mood swings, distractions, etc?

The key to combat distractions is to not force your body to study. A person needs to figure out their peak concentration hours and when their concentration capacity is the least. Stress will only occur when you have not studied thoroughly and for that it is advisable to start early in the semester. This doesn’t mean you should study everyday but at least revise what you have learnt.

  • If you are made the Vice Chancellor of Mumbai University, what changes would you like to initiate in the Indian education system? And even in BMS?

Wow!! This answer could run into pages. I am not very well versed with the minute details of our education system . But what i have seen in our academic life is that a lot of importance has been given to parrot learning. Students are not given the opportunity to exercise their minds. Portions are generally vast and the time given to cover them is too less. Education should be a stress free learning process where people love what they learn and also should be given vocational options along with academics.

Particularly  i would say bms needs more practical knowledge than theoretical.

  • Does coming from a well reputed college/school help you boost your confidence? What message would you like to give to the students coming from an inferior college/vernacular medium?

Firstly, i would like to mention that no college is inferior, they are just lesser known. And no, it does not really matter. It is a person’s self confidence that needs to be high. The advantage of coming from a reputed college is the fact that we get more campus placements than lesser known colleges.
