Nineteen-year-old woman, the only one to help Kalyan’s knife attack victim, says he could have been saved

Mayur Mehta (53), a businessman who died after his leg was slashed in a road rage incident in Kalyan on Saturday night, was surrounded by a crowd of about 50 people, none of whom came forward to help him, according to the woman who witnessed the attack and came to his aid – albeit in vain.

Mehta, chief executive officer of Klini Tek Diagnostic Centre at Rambaug, was on his way back home from work when his scooter brushed the motorcycle of one Jayesh Dongre. An enraged Dongre, who was with his friends, confronted Mehta and following a argument stabbed him in the leg. Mehta managed to get back on his scooter and ride it for a few hundred metres, but fell by the side of the road as he was losing blood quickly.

Michelle Kazin Kamle, 19, a resident of Kalyan West and a first-year Bachelor of Management Studies student at Birla college, was returning home on her scooter around 5.45 pm when she saw Mehta’s assailants slash his leg with a knife. “I was some distance away, but I could tell they were quarrelling. Suddenly, a man pulled out a knife and slashed Mehta’s leg. He fell down but managed to get back up and ride his scooter, so I thought he was fine. But afew hundred metres further down the road, he fell off his scooter, bleeding profusely,” she said.

Kamle says Metha’s attackers escaped soon after slashing his leg, and that she parked her scooter and rushed to his aid immediately. She was shocked to see that though the men had fled, a crowd of 40 to 50 simply stood around and watched Mehta as he lost consciousness, his trousers soaked in blood.

“By then it was around 6 pm. I rushed to him and lifted his head off the ground, trying to keep him conscious. Seeing little response, I took off my scarf and tied it around his wound. All the while I saw people standing around and staring but doing nothing. It angered me so much that I shouted at them,” said Kamle.

Kamle then asked a few onlookers to at least stop an auto, but none of the drivers they halted was willing to take him to hospital.

“Seeing this, I tried to stop an auto myself. I asked the driver to help me, but he resfused. I was so upset that I picked up a stone and broke his windscreen. Seeing my anger, others finally came forward and the auto driver eventually agreed to take us to Telavane hospital. Mehta was admitted to the ICU at 6.45 pm. However, around 9.30 pm I got to know that he did not survive,” she said.

Kamle, a resident of doodh naka near Kalyan’s Jama Masjid, said she broke down on seeing Mehta’s grieving wife and daughter, and when she learnt that Saturday was Mehta’s wedding anniversary.

“If people had helped me quickly and not just stood around watching, he would not have lost so much blood. The doctors told us that he died of excessive bleeding as his artery had been severed. Had he been brought to the hospital sooner, he would have been alive to celebrate with his family,” she said.

Kazin Kamle, her father, said, “I am sad for Mehta’s death. But I am also proud that my daughter, who is just 19, did not think twice before helping him. Hope this sends a message to people who do nothing.”

Inspector Sunil Dhanawade of Mahatma Phule police station said, “We arrested Dongre late on Sunday night from Rambaug and recovered the knife. He has been charged with murder and the court has given the police custody of him till December 21.”
